As Claudia Sheinbaum prepares to take office as president, she has unveiled an ambitious National Infrastructure Plan set to transform Mexico’s infrastructure. This plan features 25 major projects across highways, railways, and airports, aiming to enhance connectivity and boost economic development nationwide.
Highways and Regional Connectivity
The plan includes modernizing 3,000 kilometers of rural roads and expanding key highways, such as Los Cabos-Tijuana, Mochis-Chihuahua, and Guaymas-Ciudad Juárez. These upgrades will not only facilitate the movement of goods and people but also drive regional economic growth by strengthening the country’s road infrastructure.
Railways and Passenger Transport
Sheinbaum’s plan is equally ambitious in the railway sector, aiming to double freight capacity and create new passenger train lines. Key projects include the AIFA-Pachuca and Mexico-Querétaro-León-Aguascalientes trains, connecting major urban and economic centers and maximizing the existing 18,000 kilometers of railway tracks.
Port and Airport Development
Port development is also a priority, with significant investments in ports like Salina Cruz, Ensenada, Guaymas, and Manzanillo to increase efficiency and cargo handling capacity. The plan includes enhancing connectivity at the Felipe Ángeles International Airport and improving the Mexico City International Airport, along with expanding various regional airports.
Energy Transition and Water Management
Sheinbaum’s plan addresses the energy transition by promoting solar panels and heaters to boost energy efficiency and reduce fossil fuel dependency. Water management policies will include reuse initiatives, river cleanup programs, and agricultural irrigation improvements to ensure a sustainable water supply.
Economic and Social Impact
These projects are expected to generate around 370,000 jobs, involving women, youth, and small and medium-sized enterprises in supply chains and export activities. The plan also proposes regional productive vocations in ten development corridors, promoting inclusive economic growth nationwide.
Claudia Sheinbaum’s National Infrastructure Plan represents a significant step towards a more connected, sustainable, and prosperous future for Mexico. With a comprehensive vision and a focus on modernizing key infrastructures, this plan has the potential to transform the country’s
economic and social landscape.
